The T Shirt - From Underwear to Social Statement

Few people in the world do not have at least one, usually more, t shirts hanging in their closet. T shirts are the ultimate easy wear, easy wash garment, and their popularity never diminishes.

During World War I, American troops noticed the European soldiers wearing lightweight cotton undershirts during the hot summer days. These shirts quickly caught on, as standard Army issue clothing at that time was made of wool. When the troops returned home, they brought the new fashion with them, which became known as "T" shirts, due to their simple design. By World War II, both the Army and the Navy had included the t shirt as standard issue underwear.

In the early 1950's, thanks to the magic of Hollywood, the t shirt moved from being unseen underwear to a fashion statement. Worn on the screen by the likes of Marlon Brando and James Dean, the t shirt quickly became a symbol of rebellious youth.

In the 1960's, that period of overwhelming free expression, people began to tie dye and screenprint the basic white t shirt to wear their opinions for everyone to see. The low cost garment became an even bigger commercial success. It was inexpensive, in style and could make any statement you cared to print on it. Rock and roll bands soon caught on, and realized they could make a great deal of money selling t shirts with their band name or concert dates on them. Professional sports teams were not far behind, and soon officially licensed t shirts became very hot merchandise.

Nearly a hundred years later, the t shirt is still popular. It remains an inexpensive, easy wear, easy wash garment. The artwork symbolizes the cultural and social climate, and continues to make a personal statement for the wearer. From the battlefields of Europe, the t shirt has now made its way into space with the astronauts, and shows no sign of ever losing its enormous popularity.
