Bison & Deer

Our North American hoofed animals range from the grasslands of the prairies to the Arctic tundra. Members of the large Deer family, caribou are found on the northern tundra. The bison is a member of the Cow family, who once ranged the continent in the millions. Their population is now restricted to parks and reserves.

In Europe and Russia, reindeer have been domesticated for thousands of years. In North America, they are known as caribou, and remain wild.

Reindeer inhabit the boreal (taiga) forest and arctic tundra. They eat woody plants, grasses, sedges and rushes in summer, and in the winter survive on slow growing lichen. Herds forage over long distances to avoid depleting the scarce northern vegetation, often following set migration routes throughout the North American arctic.

Caribou/reindeer are unique among members of the deer family because both males and females have antlers, which they use to dig edible vegetation from beneath the snow. They are adapted to their northern habitat with dense fur, small ears and hairy muzzles which prevent heat loss, and broad, flat hooves to help them walk on snow or boggy ground. Unlike those of horses or cows, caribou hooves are split in the middle, allowing them more traction as they traverse uneven ground.

Reindeer are used by indigenous people for their meat, milk, and their antlers for carving. Their thick winter hides are made into clothes and footwear, and padded with grass for extra warmth.
