Giant Pandas Tidbits

Need to eat about 33 lbs of leaves and stems each day to meet their energy requirements

Their diet is 99% bamboo, and they need to feed 16-24 hours per day, with breaks for short naps

Have a paw with five 'fingers' and a 'thumb', which is actually an enlarged, moveable wristbone used to grasp handfuls of vegetation

Pupils are vertical slits like those of cats, rather than the usual round eyes of other bear species

Need to drink fresh water every day from rivers and streams in their natural habitat

Females are only reproductive about 2 or 3 days a year, during the spring, and may raise only 5-8 cubs in her lifetime

Newborn pandas, at 3-5 ounces, are 1/900th the size of the mother, and except for marsupials, are the smallest newborn mammal relative to it's mother's size

Have flattened back teeth to help them crush bamboo stems

Make a bleating sound like a lamb or a goat, and don't roar like other bears

Usually give birth to twins, but abandon one baby. Zookeepers in China have perfected "twin-swapping" - hand raising the abandoned one and switching babies every few days so both cubs get milk and attention from the mother.

Bamboo plants come in many species which all bloom and die at the same time, meaning the pandas have to travel great distances to find a different kind of bamboo

The penalty for poaching a panda in China is death or life in prison

Maximum age for a captive animal was 34 - lifespan in the wild is unknown
