What is the world's
deadliest animal? Female
Anopheles mosquitos, which carry malaria, kill more than

What is the strongest animal in the
world? The award goes to the rhinoceros
beetle, that can lift 850 times its own
weight.
What makes that annoying buzzing sound of
mosquitos? The familiar buzz is a result of their
tiny wings beating up to 600 times per
second.
How many insect species are
there? Entemologists estimate there are
between 5 and 150 million species, with many more yet to be
discovered and identified by science.
What's the difference between a moth and
butterfly? Generally speaking, butterflies are
active during the day, while moths flit about at night. While
there are a few moths active during the day, a sure way to tell
the difference is to look at their antennae. Butterflies always
have club tipped antennae, while moths have many types -
feathery, hairy, threadlike etc.
What is the fastest
insect? Dragonflies have been measured flying
18 mph. On the ground, the cockroach can cover about 40" a
second.
Which insect has the longest
migration? While you might think it was the
Monarch butterfly, who travels 2000 mi each year, the record
holder is actually the desert locust, who annually moves 2800
miles.
What is the most dangerous insect to
man? The common
housefly. They 'taste' with their feet, so they land on
everything tasting and spreading diseases such as intestinal
worms, dysentry, gastoenteritis, typhoid, cholera and

What is the loudest
insect? The record goes to male cicadas in
Africa, which can be heard for 1/4 of a
mile.
What is the biggest
insect? Depending on your classification of
biggest - giant walking sticks of south east Asia measure up to
13" long, making them the longest. Goliath beetles of Africa
can weigh up to 1/4 pound, making them the heaviest
insect.
How big do butterflies
get? The biggest butterfly in the world is
the Queen Alexandra birdwing butterfly of New Guinea, with a
wingspan of more than 11".
How much silk can one silkworm
produce? Each silkworm cocoon can produce a
single thread 1500 feet long.
